Four Days in Fiji: your ultimate guide

My sister and I recently spent four days in Fiji and had the best time. I’ve included all of my trip planning tips and Fiji recommendations below to help you plan your dream Fiji vacation!

Getting there

the nadi airport is the easiest way to arrive in fiji. from the US, there are direct flights from los angeles, san francisco, dallas, and honolulu.

Location

When planning your trip to Fiji, the first decision you have to make is whether to stay on the main island (Viti Levu) or one of the many smaller islands (yasawa or mamanuca island groups are the most common).

Main island vs smaller islands

There are pros and cons of staying on the main island or the Smaller islands. We ultimately decided to stay on the main island because of the extra travel time and cost that was associated with staying on the islands. However, I think if you’re in the country for at least a week then trekking out to the islands might be the move!

Pros and Cons of staying on Viti Levu

Pros:

  • Shorter overall travel time (depends which island and method of transportation, but I generally believe this is the case)
  • More flexible hotel transport options (taxi vs scheduled ferry)
  • Likely cheaper travel cost (driving vs ferry / helicopter)
  • Access to bigger resorts

Cons:

  • Bigger resorts can feel more touristy
  • Less secluded
  • less “scenic” beaches (from personal experience, the beaches on the mainland were still beautiful. But apparently even better on the islands)

Pros and Cons of staying on smaller islands

Pros:

  • More privacy / relaxed atmosphere
  • “better” beaches – white sand and crystal clear water
  • Potentially better snorkeling / diving (e.g., Manta rays in specific spots in the Yasawa Islands during specific times of year)

Cons:

  • Requires transportation via a ferry or helicopter. Ferries run on a specific schedule from Port Denarau (~30 minutes from the Nadi Airport), which may not line up with your flight schedule. Helicopters depart from the airport, but are pretty expensive depending on where you are going (I believe it was going to be ~1000usd round trip per person for us)
  • Potentially less access to cultural activities, but some resorts/hotels offer these

Hotel Recommendations

I’ve listed out my hotel recommendations for both Viti Levu and the smaller islands below. I only have personal experience staying at the Marriott Momi Bay, but I’ve included the others that we considered as they also look amazing.

Also, from what I have gathered about traveling in Fiji, you’ll want to pick a hotel with good food options as there are limited restaurants / bars outside of the resorts.

Side note: Many people hop between hotels on their Fiji Holiday, but I think you need at least 3-4 nights in one place in order to not feel rushed and constantly on the move. In my opinion if you’re in the country for only four days, it’s probably best to just stay in one place the entire time.

Viti Levu Hotels

Fiji Marriott Momi Bay

I highly recommend the Fiji Marriott Momi Bay resort if you’re looking to stay on the main island. The hotel is less than an hour from Nadi Airport, but is located on a huge swath of property that makes it feel very secluded and relaxing.

We booked the Duplex Lagoon Bure, which overlooked the lagoon, overwater villas, and much of the resort. This room gave us access to the lagoon’s beach as well. The room itself was extremely spacious, clean, and comfortable.

The hotel has two pools: one for adults only and the other open to all guests. We admittedly only went to the adults only pool (which was great), but the other pool does have a swim up bar, which would have been nice.

There are several restaurants available on the property, too. Fish bar definitely has the best food, but is a bit more expensive. Lagoon house is more laid back, offering mostly pizza / pasta options. Goji offers a different cuisine every night, and is also where an expansive breakfast buffet is offered every morning. If you’re looking for something quick, the Fiji Baking Company has pastries, smoothies, and ice cream.

Hotel Transport

Your hotel will likely recommend different transport options, but here are a few that we used / came across when researching.

Viti Levu transports

We used Rosie Holidays and had a great experience with them. It was around 200usd total for transport to our hotel and back to the airport.

Helicopters

Play

If you want to take a break from lounging by the pool or ocean, there are several activities to take advantage of in Fiji. Your hotel will have plenty of recommendations, but here are my few:

Snorkeling / diving

There are tons of amazing snorkeling and diving spots around Fiji. We booked a half-day snorkeling trip through Kaiwai Watersports (they have a location at the Marriott) and had the best time. Highly recommend doing something like this while you’re in Fiji.

Jet Skiing

We didn’t have the chance to do this, but we saw a lot of people on jet skis and it looked like a ton of fun. Kaiwai also offered this!

Paddleboarding

We rented paddleboards (again from Kaiwai) the last morning of our trip. It was such a relaxing activity to do out on the lagoon of Momi Bay.

Malamala Beach Club

We spent a day at malamala beach club and I can’t recommend it more! the beach club is the only thing on this tiny island, making it feel super secluded and unique. The food and drinks were also really good, and they have snorkeling gear / paddleboards for you to use if you’d like. I highly recommend booking one of the poolside cabana seats – it was much nicer than having to find your own seating on the beach. There is more content from this beach club on my Tiktok here!
